Happy Guanacaste Day! The library is closed today in honor of Guanacaste Day, a celebration of Costa Rica’s peaceful annexation of the Guanacaste province in 1824. It’s a day to reflect on our shared history and celebrate the culture, music, and traditions of Guanacaste. Enjoy these beautiful moments from recent folkloric dances by Library dance groups that brought our community together! We’ll reopen Monday with regular hours. ¡Feliz Día de la Anexión del Partido de Nicoya! La biblioteca está cerrada hoy en honor al Día de Guanacaste, una celebración de la anexión pacífica de la provincia de Guanacaste por parte de Costa Rica en 1824. Es un día para reflexionar sobre nuestra historia compartida y celebrar la cultura, música y tradiciones guanacastecas. ¡La semana pasada, más de 500 estudiantes participaron en la primera feria vocacional organizada por jóvenes, liderada por el Consejo Juvenil de Nosara! El evento se llevó a cabo en el colegio público de Nosara y en Del Mar Academy, y reunió a universidades, institutos técnicos y organizaciones sin fines de lucro de todo Costa Rica para compartir oportunidades—desde carreras y certificaciones hasta becas y programas virtuales. Estos jóvenes increíbles lideraron toda la iniciativa, con el apoyo de la biblioteca y de Lagarta Lodge, Harmony Hotel, Olas Verdes Hotel y Casa Romántica, quienes generosamente ofrecieron hospedaje y desayuno a nuestros invitados. La energía, emoción e impacto fueron increíbles—¡y las instituciones participantes ya pidieron reservar su espacio para el próximo año! Last week, over 500 students participated in the first-ever youth-led college fair, organized by the Nosara Youth Council! Held at both the local public high school and Del Mar Academy, the event brought together universities, technical institutes, and nonprofits from across Costa Rica to share opportunities—from degrees and certifications to financial aid and virtual programs. These amazing teens led the entire initiative, with support from the library and Lagarta Lodge, Harmony Hotel, Olas Verdes Hotel, and Casa Romantica who generously provided free lodging and breakfast for our our guests. The energy, excitement, and impact were incredible—and participating institutions have already asked to return next year.

A huge thank you to Sadie and Alicia from @guanavista_cr for their incredible support! These two amazing volunteers dedicated their time and energy to our English program, helping local learners build confidence and skills. Not only that—they recently hosted a fantastic fundraiser to help relaunch the Ostional high school book club! Thanks to their efforts, students once again have a space to read and connect, through literature. Her kindness, dedication, and ability to build strong relationships with local Ticos have made a difference in so many lives. Flipping through the records of the first books we lent in 1996, we’re reminded of just how far the David Kitson Library has come. What started in a local elementary school, then moved to a small storefront, has grown into the vibrant space we know today—thanks to years of hard work, dedication, and community support. Every book borrowed, every story shared, and every program offered has been a step toward something bigger. Today, on National Librarian Day in Costa Rica, we want to express our deep gratitude to our librarian, Consuelo, for her many years of service. Her dedication and love for this library have helped shape it into the heart of our community. Thank you, Consuelo, for all that you do! Al revisar los registros de los primeros libros que prestamos en 1996, recordamos el gran progreso que ha logrado la Biblioteca David Kitson. Lo que comenzó en una escuela primaria local, luego se trasladó a una pequeña tienda, se ha convertido en el espacio vibrante que conocemos hoy, gracias a años de arduo trabajo, dedicación y apoyo comunitario. 📖 What Are We Reading? 📖 Our Library Director, David Schreiner, is currently reading El Zorro by Isabel Allende! "A delightful retelling of a classic story, full of adventure and all the things that make the Wild West interesting—filtered through Allende’s typical flair for beautiful and subtle prose," says David. This novel is a must-read for anyone who loves adventure stories! Recommended for young adults and older, El Zorro was also one of the first books David read in Spanish. 📚 Have you read El Zorro? Our Seniors Group made a splash once again at Centro Acuático Nosara! 💦 This time, they took on more exercises, built confidence in the water, and had a fantastic time staying active. We love seeing them enjoy these experiences and can’t wait for the next class.
